Testing Procedures - Divergence

Facing the patient, hold an object such as a pencil about 1 inch away from the patient's nose. Instruct the patient to focus on the object and then slowly move the object away from the patient at a steady rate; the patient should demonstrate symmetrical divergence (pictured below). Document normal or abnormal responses.

Special Instructions or Considerations

  • If the patient wears bifocals, make sure they are looking through the reading portion of the lenses
