Testing Procedures - Motor

The masseter and temporalis muscles are examined by palpating the muscles when the jaw is clenched tightly together (pictured below); resistance can also be applied, if indicated. The examiner should also note deviations of the jaw when the mouth is opened and closed, along with any asymmetries or altered movement patterns. Document normal or abnormal responses.
