Facial Nerve

Introduction

  • Motor function is evaluated using a variety of observed facial expressions, and taste is evaluated over the anterior tongue (CN VII) and the posterior tongue (CN IX)

Tests to be performed

  • Sensory and Motor testing

Expected findings

  • Facial symmetry while performing facial expressions and the ability to identify common tastes placed on the tongue

Equipment

  • Sterile stock bottles of familiar liquids (i.e., sugar water, salt water, lemon juice)
  • Sterile cotton swab or sterile medicine dropper
