Preface and Purpose
The instructional modules contained on this site were designed and developed entirely within the Wayne State University Department of Health Care Sciences under the direction of Fredrick D. Pociask. All modules represent a departmental Open-Courseware initiative and can be accessed for free under a Creative Commons License.

The primary goals of the Wayne State University Department of Health Care Sciences Open-Courseware initiative are to design and develop multidisciplinary course modules that address identified instructional needs across multiple departmental courses, to facilitate the use of instructional technology in authentic teaching environments, and to promote instructional technology research. Of equal importance, individuals supporting the WSU Department of Health Care Sciences Open-Courseware initiative share a strong philosophical orientation towards free and available instruction in higher education.

Instructional Design and Development
The Wayne State University Department of Health Care Sciences Open-Courseware modules were designed using formal instructional design principles and were developed to function as blended learning solutions. That is, the instructional modules offer flexible, asynchronous access for existing courses, while on-site laboratories provide purposeful, hands-on laboratory experiences.

Content selection criteria were based on 1) identified curricular needs, 2) wide-ranging applicability to a broad scope of health care professions, 3) availability of subject matter experts, 4) technically obtainable goals, 5) content that undergoes little change, and 6) a likelihood for open-access dissemination and adoption. Current modules are multimedia in format and incorporate user interactivity, testing interactions with feedback, computer-generated characters, still images, and video combined with audio narration. Current development includes Internet-based modules, and future plans include downloadable CD-ROM formats, Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) compliant packages, and additional modules as time and resources allow.
