Introduction

  • The hypoglossal nerve seldom presents with pathology and is easily assessed

Tests to be performed

  • Tongue movements and tongue strength

Expected findings

  • Tongue is symmetrical, in midline, and without atrophy or tremor
  • Patient is able to perform most tongue movements
  • Patient is able to resist against tongue depressor

Equipment

  • Sterile tongue depressor
