Special instructions
  • To facilitate communication, suggest and define words to use, such as “bent” in the initial range, mid-range, or end range.
  • If the patient is unable to duplicate the position because of motor control problems (i.e., decreased strength, limited range of motion, pain, etc.) he or she can describe the position of the joint(s).
  • The health care practitioner can choose to isolate individual joints or test multiple joints in the same limb at one time. If the latter procedure is chosen, the health care practitioner must be careful not to provide extraneous cues or to over-generalize the results.
