Examination and evaluation of somatosensory function
The examination and evaluation of somatosensation requires tests and measures for a variety of sensory modalities. These are often classified as exteroception (superficial sensation), proprioception (deep sensation about the relative position of body segments), and discriminatory sensation (i.e., requiring cortical integration to interpret the meaning of sensory input). A typical classification is listed below.

Exteroception
  • Touch Awareness
  • Touch Localization
  • Extinction
  • Pressure
  • Two-point discrimination
  • Pain
  • Temperature
Use this laboratory worksheet as you prepare to practice the testing procedures for each of the modalities PDF.
Proprioception   Discriminatory
  • Vibration
  • Joint Position Sense
  • Joint Motion/Kinesthesia
  • Stereognosis
  • Graphesthesia
  • Barognosis
