Measuring respiratory rate review, clinical notes and interpretation

A fast respiratory rate may be caused by:
  • Exercise
  • Medications
  • Disease
    • COPD
    • Angina
  • URTI
  • Anxiety
  • Young age (children)
  • Smoking

A slow respiratory rate may be caused by;

  • Physically fit
  • Medications/drugs
  • Enhanced body relaxation
Conditions or symptoms that require emergency medical treatment include:
  • Medications/drugs if person can’t “catch breath”
  • Angina

Conditions or symptoms that require medical referral include:

  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Disease (i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Shortness of breath
